Postnatal Care ( Sootika Paricharya)

After childbirth, the mother is referred to as “Sutika” in Ayurveda, and the special care given to her during this period is called “Sutika Paricharya.” This phase is extremely important for restoring the mother’s health and strength after delivery.

According to Ayurveda, Vata dosha increases significantly after childbirth due to the physical strain, blood loss, and empty space created in the uterus after the baby is born. At this time, the mother’s digestive power, immunity, and overall strength are also weakened, making proper care essential.

Therefore, the mother should receive adequate rest, proper hygiene, and a nourishing diet for at least 6 to 12 weeks after delivery. This recovery period allows the body to regain lost energy and gradually bring the imbalanced doshas back to normal.

Postnatal Care

During this time, the expanded uterus slowly returns to its normal size and position, while the ligaments, muscles, and tendons associated with the uterus begin to regain their strength.

Ayurveda recommends a combination of special dietary practices, Abhyanga (body massage) with medicated oils, and herbal preparations such as specific kadhas (decoctions). These practices help balance Vata, improve digestion, strengthen the body, and support the mother’s natural recovery.

Sutika Paricharya plays a vital role in rebuilding the mother’s health, enhancing immunity, and helping her return to normal physical and emotional well-being naturally.
